Rita Lee was born December 31, 1947 in the Hospital Samaritano, in Higienópolis (district of São Paulo), Brazil. She was registered at the civil registry of Santa Cecília, on January 11, 1948.
Her parents were Charles Fenley Jones and Romilda “Chesa” Padula. Her father was a descendant of Confederate American immigrants (known in Brazil as Confederados) from Alabama and Tennessee who settled in the city of Santa Bárbara d'Oeste, state of São Paulo, while her mother was the child of two Italian immigrants from Molise who settled in Rio Claro, of the same state.
Rita was known as the "Rainha do rock brasileiro" (Brazil’s Queen of Rock), and was a member the 1960s band "Os Mutantes". Later, she became a solo artist.
Rita had two older sisters.
She married Arnaldo Baptista of Os Mutantes; they later divorced.
She was married to Roberto de Carvalho, and they had three children.
She passed away in 2023 in São Paulo, Brazil, at the age of 76.
