Biography

Henry Moses Jones was born on 23 March 1870 in Goldville, Clay County, Alabama. He was the son of William F Jones and Nancy C Ogle Jones. Henry was in the 1870 US Census with his parents at age 2 months old; his month of birth is listed as March (Mch) on the census. His birth year on his gravemarker (1869) is off by one year.

Henry married Mattie Lisbeth Miles about 1896. A marriage record has not been found. Henry and Mattie had nine children:

Henry and Mattie lived in Chambers County, Alabama and then Rockalo, Heard County, Georgia for the first years of their marriage. By 1902, they had moved to Clay County, Alabama where they lived for many years in the Idaho community. Though Henry was always listed in the census records as a farmer, he was also a Baptist preacher.

By 1935, Henry had moved to Talladega County, Alabama and was separated from Mattie, even though it was stated in the 1940 US Census that he was a widow. He was living with his oldest daughter's family. In the 1950 US Census, Henry is living alone in a house on Battle Street in Talladega. He stated that he was separated from his spouse.

Henry passed away at the age of 90 on 21 February 1961 in Talladega at the home of his son, Looney. His cause of death is listed as myocardial infarction (heart attack). He is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Talladega.

Rev. H. M. Jones, 91, Baptist minister, dies

TALLADEGA, Ala., Feb. 22 --- The Rev. Henry Moses Jones, 91, a minister for 78 years who baptized more than 1000 persons, died at his home yesterday. Death of the Baptist minister was due to a heart condition. He was active as a guest minister until last Thanksgiving. Mr. Jones would have been 92 March 23. The aged minister had performed more than 500 weddings and preached more than 500 funerals. He attended a formal school only three months.

HE WAS THE LAST member of his family in his generation. He was a native of Randolph County. Mr. Jones is survived by three sons, Looney W. Jones, with whom he made his home; Homer W. Jones and Lester Jones, all of Talladega; two daughters, Mrs. Clara Dobson of Sylacauga and Mrs. Cora Gurley of Talladega, and 27 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Central Baptist Church, of which he was a member. Officiating ministers will be the Rev. Morris Freeman and the Rev. T. M. Hamby. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery with grandsons acting as pallbearers. Usrey Funeral Home is in charge.
