Robert Clifford Jones was born 30 Mar 1936 in Los Angeles, California[1] to Canadian-born film editor Harmon Clifford Jones and native Illinoian Carolyn Webb.

In 1940, Robert was aged 4 and living with his parents Harmon C Jones (aged 28, Canada) and Carolyn M Jones (27, Illinois) in 60-218 of the City of Los Angeles, California.[2]

Upon being drafted into the Army, Jones served at the Army Pictorial Center from 1958 to 1960 as a film editor, editing Army training films, documentaries, and several segments of The Big Picture television program.

Jones was nominated three times for the Academy Award for Best Film Editing: It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (1963), Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967), and Bound for Glory (1976).

He received an Academy Award for the screenplay of the film Coming Home (1978). As an editor, Jones has had notable collaborations with the directors Arthur Hiller (seven films from 1967 to 1992) and Hal Ashby (4 films from 1973 to 1982).

Jones was married to Sylvia Hirsch Jones, a psychotherapist. He is the father of film editor Leslie Jones; both Robert and Leslie in addition to Robert's father Harmon have been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Film Editing.

In February 2014, Jones was presented with the American Cinema Editors Career Achievement Award. Jones last served as a professor at the School of Cinematic Arts of the University of Southern California (USC) before his death.
