William Jolly was born about 1742 in the village of Hundon in south-west Suffolk, England; he was baptised at All Saints Church there on 6 March that year, the son of James Jolly and his wife Amy (formerly King). [1] However, the couple did not have any further children baptised there. They had married on 6 February 1736/37 at St Botolph's Church, Hadstock, Essex; he was a widower resident in Hundon, she was a single woman of Hadstock, a village just across the River Stour, which formed the county boundary between Suffolk to the north and Essex to the south. [2]
The connection between William and the Golding family of Hundon around 1770 relates to the birth about 1773 of Amy Golding, the illegitimate daughter of Mary Golding. [3] Her father is not named in the entry for her baptism in the parish register, but there is convincing evidence from documentary sources and genetic genealogy that he was in fact William Jolly - see Research notes: Amy's biological father?
However, clearly this biographical profile of William Jolly is hardly a comprehensive account of his life. No doubt a more direct descendant of his will write something more informative at some future date.
Mary Golding was baptised at All Saints Church in Hundon in 1752, but any man living in that village or nearby around 1772 could have been her lover and thus the biological father of her illegitimate daughter, Amy Golding (baptised 1773). We have several clues as to his possible identity:
1. Mary named her daughter Amy, and Amy was the forename of the mother of William Jolly (baptised 1742, Hundon).
2. The manager of Amy Golding's profile, Mark Carroll, is a direct descendant of hers. He shares 26.7cM of DNA with Patricia [surname withheld, as still living], who is a descendant of William Jolly (baptised 1742, Hundon); he is her 6xgreat-grandfather. Mark and Patricia are thus 6th cousins once removed, a genealogical relationship that has a 56% chance of corresponding to 26.7cM of shared DNA. [4]
3. As far as we know, William Jolly did not have a brother living in Hundon and of an appropriate age around 1772. His father James died in 1769, before Amy was born, but William might have had a paternal uncle or cousin.
