Elizabeth was born in 1846.
She was the daughter of Randolph Jolliff and Peggy Huddleston.
She grew up on her father's farm at Jolliff Spring, Highland Township, Oregon County, MO (near Jolliff Cemetery).
There's a story about her from the Civil War. Her father, Randolph was off fighting with the Confederate Army leaving his wife with 7 children at home. A group of Union soldiers came by and were taking food and blankets from the family. One of the children was sick and Bets protested vigorously. One officer was amused by her and told her if she would give another certain soldier a cussing, he would leave them alone--which she gladly did. (See the bio on her father's page for the whole story.)
Her first baby (John George Washington Jolliff, b 1868) was the illegitimate son of Ambrose Baty. (Ambrose married Matilda King in 1869, and probably never acknowledged his son, George).
Then Bets married in 1875 to Farris Self,[1] no children, divorced 1877.
Married 2nd 1878 to Mark M. Judd,[2] a widower with 3 children. She and Mark had 4 more children.
She was a mid-wife like her mother.
Everybody called her “Aint Bets".
