Birth

Kinyon Johnson was born c. 1769, which is estimated from his headstone inscription and census records. The first record found for him is in South Kingston, Washington, Rhode Island at the age of 16 as husband and head of household. He was probably born in that area. [1]

He married Elizabeth Peckham (c.1767-1843) c. 1788 as they were married on the 1790 Census and had 1 child at that time.

He married 1) Abigail Unknown (c. 1793- ?) and 2) Harriet French (1791-1860) on 6 June 1821 in South Kingstown, Rhode Island (Her surname was Hines on that Rhode Island record.). Dr. Johnson died on 5 June 1859 in Kingston, Washington, Rhode Island, United States. Mentioned in his father's will.
  2. Hazard Johnson was born c. 1791 in Rhode Island, United States. He married Olive Huntington (1790- ). She was the daughter of Jonas Huntington (1754-1830) and Rhoda Baldwin 1758-1825). Hazard died on 6 May 1863 in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut, United States. [2] Mentioned in father's will.

Last Will and Testament

In the name of God Amen. I Kinyon Johnson of Mansfield in the county of Tolland and state of Connecticut being of sound and desposing (?) mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say imprimis. I will that all my just debts and funeral charges be paid and discharged by my executor herein named. Item I give and demise unto my Wife Elizabeth Johnson the use of all my property both real and personal during her natural life. Item I give and and bequeath unto my son Peleg Johnson one dollar. Item I give and bequeath unto my son Hazard Johnson twenty dollars and my wearing apparal. Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Hannah Atwood one dollar. Item I give and bequeath unto my grandson William Atwood forty dollars. Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Geer one dollar. Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter Sally Barrows one dollar. Item I give and bequeath unto my son Heman S. Johnson one dollar. Item I give and (bequeath is crossed out and above it is written demise) unto my son William V. Johnson (one dollar is crossed out.) All my estate both real and personal at the decease of my wife Elizabeth. Lastly I do make and constitute William V. Johnson executor of this my last will and testament and to pay out at the decease of my wife Elizabeth the legacies here in named.

In witness whereof I have set my hand and seal this 25th day of April in the year of our Lord 1835. Kinyon Johnson Signed sealed published and pronounced by the said Kinyon Johnson as his last will and testament who in his presence and in the presence of each other have here unto subscribed our names.

Windham County document following will in the probate package shows that the 3 witnesses appeared before Origen Bennett, Justice of Peace, and gave oath that they attested to the will. The will was presented in court on 29 December 1843, proved, approved, and recorded according to F.F. Hanks, Judge. There followed an inventory of the Estate of the deceased on 15 February 1844.

Death and Burial

Kinyon died on 26 November 1843 in Mansfield, Tolland, Connecticut, United States at the age of 74. He was buried in the Bedlam Road Cemetery, Chaplin, Windham, Connecticut. Find A Grave: Memorial #79384911

Research Note: In looking at the 1790 United States Federal Census, there is a Philip Peckham (name of wife's family) near them and on all the other pages of the 8 pages for their town are Benjamin Peckham, Josephus Peckham, George Peckham, Bar...Peckham, Michael Johnson, Timothy Peckham Jr., William Peckham, Peter Peckham, Timothy Peckham, Abel Peckham, Peleg Peckham (the last 2 are noted in Westerly, which is the 8th page of this census. There are also several men with the last name of Kinyon.) At the very least, his wife's family is here.
  2. Baldwin, C.C.: page 701, Rhoda Baldwin is family member 128. Her children listed.
  3. 1800: 2 males 10-15; 1 male 26-44; 3 females under 10; 1 female 26-44. In 1800 he would have been 31.
