Biography

This profile is part of the Johnson Name Study.

Marcus was born April 7, 1932 in Campobello, S.C. to Paul Kistler Johnson and Lora Jeanette Runion Johnson.[1][2][3] He was the second of five children. Marcus went to Campobello School and attended Gramling United Methodist Church where his mother was the pianist. When she wasn't playing at church, she taught music from her home. His father was a peach orchardist. Marcus grew up on a farm where there was plenty of work for everyone. Much time was spent in playing music. The four boys and one girl formed a gospel music group that performed at churches and revivals. That is how my father met my mother. Her father was a preacher at a revival where my father was singing. Marcus married Cora Lee Chapmam on May 22, 1954.

Marcus served in Korea during the years 1953 through 1956 in the Army Air Corp. He trained at Fort Gordon, GA in communications. He was part of a special Army signal unit that was embedded in the Air Force. He was attached to 8th Air Force, 440th Signal. He hung lines in the Korean War for communications and for radio. Marcus was discharged honorably at the rank of Sargeant in 1953.

After the war, Marcus worked for Southern Bell until he retired and started Johnson Communications which was later run by his oldest son, Mark until his death. His youngest son now works in Cloud Communications.

Marcus died on February 10, 2017 in his home in Campobello, Spartanburg, South Carolina at the age of 84. He was buried at Gramling United Methodist Church the following Monday. [4][5]
