Biography[1]

Edward Johnson was born about 1593, based on depositions where he gave his age.[MPCR 4:27; YLR 3:116] His origins are unknown.

He emigrated in 1622, settling initially in Wessagusset, removing to York, ME by 1634. He was an agent/trade merchant.[MPCR 4:27; WJ 1:100-01] He was part of an advance party sent out by Thomas Weston. He discovered a plot by the Indians against Plymouth and informed Plymouth authorities of the threat.[NEHGR 7:209-10]

He married by 1646 Priscilla _____, who was born about 1618 and died between 2 Oct 1706 and 4 Jul 1716.[Maine PR 1:146; 1:71-72]

"Both Edward Johnson and his wife fell under suspicion of involvement in extramarital affairs. In 1644 the wife of 'one Cornish... confessed to have lived in adultery with diverse... [including Edward Johnson] [WJ 2:257-58]. On 5 July 1658 "Praecilla Johnson the wife of Mr. Edw: Johnson of York' was presented for suspicion of adultery with the gunner of Mr. Garrett's ship [MPCR 2:63]." She was also charged for failing to attend public meeting on the Lord's day more than once and for 'abusing the church and some members thereof'.

Gen. Dictionary of Maine and NH (Vol. 3, p 381) says:

"Presented [to court?] 1673 for marrying contrary to law."

Given that he was still married to Priscilla and both were still living, it's not certain what this is pertaining to.

Edward Johnson died after 9 Jan 1687/8 [MPCR 4:27]

Children

  1. Benjamin, b by 1646; d by 11 Sep 1677 when administration of his estate was granted; apparently unmarried.
  2. Deborah, b abt 1653; m1 by 1673 John Foxwell, son of Richard Foxwell; m2 by 21 Jun 1680 John Harmon
"It has been suggested that William [Johnson] of York, carpenter, could have been the eldest son of this couple, and William's son Samuel this Samuel?'s connection to John Foxwell strengthens the possibility, but firm evidence remains to be found. [GDMNH 384] Charles Edwards Banks attempted to add... a daughter "Priscilla Johnson, living in York in 1717, aged 80 years" [NEHGR 47:154, citing YLR 8:261]," but although recorded on 8 Jan 1717/8, the deposition was taken on 12 Aug 1699 and so was therefore Prsicilla, wife of Edward Johnson, immigrant.

Need proof for the children William and Samuel. Anderson doesn't recognize either.

Samuel was William's son, not Edward's. He was Edward's grandson. So Samuel should be removed and added as a son for William. However, William should not be removed as a son for Edward, rather marked "Uncertain."
We'll need reliable sources before we can make these changes. How do we know that:

a) Samuel was son of William and b) that William was son of Edward?

Found the source for Samuel being the "probable" son of William; will change that one.

Max, I finally found an entry in Gen. Dictionary of Maine and New Hampshire that makes the case for William being son of Edward. So I've left the connection and marked him uncertain. I'll admit that I find it very difficult to "decipher" GDMNH so can't quite figure out what the argument is. I've added the extract to William's profile. Perhaps you and others could take a look and "translate" it for me?

Many thanks.
