Biography

1776 Project
Captian William Johnson served with 2nd Regiment, Sussex County Militia, New Jersey Militia during the American Revolution.

William Johnson is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A064123.

William JOHNSTON, a Revolutionary soldier, came in from Hartwick, Otsego county, in 1807, and settled a half mile south of Bettsburgh, on the farm now occupied by Devillo DUTTON. He took up 50 acres in Broome county, on the line of Afton, and bought about one and one-half acres in Afton, the title to which proved defective. He subsequently purchased it of Asa STOWEL. He afterwards removed to the town of Sanford, Broome county, where he died February 10, 1843, aged 91, and Deborah, his wife, April 14, 1843, aged 81. He had six children, only one of whom is now living, Levi, in Afton, aged 77.

Dear Madam:

Reference is made to your request for the Revolutionary War record of William Johnson, whose home was Morris County, New Jersey. The data furnished herein are obtained from the papers on file and the pension claim, S. 13567, based on the Revolutionary War service of William Johnson.

He was born August 11, 1751 in Morristown, Morris County New Jersey the names of his parents are not stated.

While residing in Harrelson, Sussex County New Jersey William Johnson served with the New Jersey troops, as follows— From September 1776, one month as an Ensign in Captain Henry Countrymen's company, Colonel Thompson's regiment; In October 1776, two weeks as an Ensign in Captain Francis Headley’s company; In December, 1776, three weeks as an Ensign in the same company; From May, 1777, one month as Lieutenant and Captain Jacob Stuli’s company, Colonel John Stewarts Regiment; in September, 1777 three weeks as a Lieutenant in Captain Thomas Hill’s company, was in battle of Germantown; From June, 1780, six months as a First Lieutenant in Captain Cornelius Johnson's company, under Major Samuel Westbrook; was commissioned August 31 1781, captain and Colonel Aaron Hankinson’s Second Regiment of Sussex County Militia, and continue to serve at various times until the close of the war. He also served in several alarms against the Indians amounting in all to about five weeks, officers and dates not stated. He was allowed pension on his application executed August 6, 1832, while a resident of Braintree, Chenango County, New York. He died February 10, 1843.
