Note: John had passed away by Mar 1830 when Edward Johnson Senr filed a legal document explaining the circumstances of his death. Edward told the court that John had been in poor health for some time, and that he and Betsey and the children had moved to Augusta, Bracken, Kentucky because of his poor health. Edward reports that John died in Augusta, not in Hempstead where he had lived the majority of his life.
His father-in-law William Stevenson, a circuit-riding Methodist preacher, mentions John in his autobiography, reporting that John and Bro. Joseph Reed accompanied him on a 500-mile journey from Bellevue, Missouri, to Pecan Point, a Red River settlement in the province of Texas:
"I left my family early in the fall of 1814, in company with Bro. Joseph Reed, a local preacher and Bro. John Johnson, a professor of religion and husband of my eldest daughter."
John and Betsey subsequently move from Bellevue to Hempstead, Arkansas, along with both of their families.
