Mr. Johnson was a prominent and influential citizen of his county in his
day, and owned a large plantation on which he lived in the 456th district.
His public career began before he was married, when he was appointed Tax
Collector in 1829 by the Inferior Court. He served two years, and again in
the same office 1845-1847. He served as representative from Appling County
1839, 1840 and 1843, and as Justice of Appling Inferior Court 1849-1851. He
served as a private in the Indian War in 1838, in Capt. N. J. Holton"s
company of Appling County militia.
Mr. Johnson died at his home in Appling County, June 27, 1857. His wife
survived and died September 28, 1867. The Johnson family today constitutes
a very large Appling County connection.
Census References: 1830, 1840, 1850, Appling; 1860, widow, Appling.
JOHNSON, DUNCAN (p. 164): His wife was buried in Pine Grove Methodist Church
Cemetery in Bacon, County, and the marker shows she died Feb. 27,1868.
However, her husband is buried in Florida but the Compiler cannot find out
just where. The dates of death as given for Duncan Johnson and wife were
taken from a biographical sketch of
their son, Lemuel, published in his latter years.
Hope this helps, Joyce
