  • First-hand information. Entered by Sheila Johnson at registration.

Sheila Elinor Johnson is a native Chicago, Illinoisan. She is the third child of seven children born to Edward and Julia Johnson. Sheila married three times and had three daughters and they gave her ten grandchildren, and two great granddaughters. She had one daughter with her first husband Robert M. Martin, Julia Angelina Martin. She had two daughters with her second husband, Joseph T.L, French, Monique Andrea French, and Jonet' LaMarra French. She married Paul Edward Smith and there were no additional children. Sheila began a career in Nursing and retired as a Nurse Educator after 31 years of service. She began researching at the National Archives, helping her brother Edward, locate the maternal grandparents living in Pennsylvania. The family was hidden by using their middle name as given first names, but reaching in the Census, located them using their first names. After finding the family in the early 1970's she did not begin research until 2007. Sheila joined the Afro American Genealogical Society of Chicago, Inc (AAGHSC) where she began learning research techniques. She served the Society on a variety of committees, as Chairperson of the Mississippi Study group, served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Society.

IN 2015 she added DNA as a research tool and located her father's maternal gr gr grandparents, Alfred Allen and Emily Robertson, whose names she had not known before. She is seeking to indentify her father's paternal gr grandparents.

She began researching to learn about her paternal grandfather, Elliott Talmus JOHNSON, born in Mississippi and migrated to Chicago in about 1917.

Thank you for helping with the USBH 1880 census project in Jones County, Mississippi. The county has now been marked as complete! Emma
Hi Shelia, I straightened a confusion of two Charlie Terrys (one from Tennessee, one from Mississippi) who both married Isabellas and had a couple of children with the same name! How confusing! Your Charlie is here https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Terry-8623 the one from Tennessee is here https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Terry-9166 I disconnected some children and added them to the correct parents. I created the second set of parents as well. It took some fancy figuring out, but it's all straightened out now. Emma
Hi Sheila, the code for the African-American sticker is the phrase African-American Sticker inside double squiggly brackets. The code you've been using of US Black Heritage inside squiggly brackets is the project box which is only used on our notable profiles. The sticker should go right below the biography heading on profiles. Thanks for adding it. Emma~~US Black Heritage Project
