Henry Guy Joel is the first cousin once removed of Billy Joel.
Gunther Joel, along with his parents Leon and Johanna Joel, sailed to Havana, Cuba on 13 May 1939 aboard the SS St. Louis. His father's brother, Karl, had immigrated to Cuba with his wife and son four months earlier. The ship's passengers were denied entry when they arrived and the boat returned to Europe. Gunther's parents were killed in the gas chambers at Auschwitz in 1942, but Gunther was hidden in France[1] and able to escape to Switzerland. He later emigrated to the United States and lived on Long Island, going by the name of Henry Guy Joel. He served in the Korean War,[2], and is buried in the Long Island National Cemetery.[3]
