The following timeline is from Hiram's Military Service Record on Fold3.[3]
Hiram enlisted as a private in Company G/C, 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment on March 8, 1862. Company C was redesignated as Company G.
Hiram earned a bounty of $50.00 for enlisting.
Hiram was captured at Island No. 10 in the Mississippi River on April 8, 1862. This date was the end of a six-week siege on the island that resulted in a Union victory. This island was a key stronghold that controlled and defended river traffic.
After he was captured, Hiram was sent to Camp Butler (a POW camp) in Springfield, Illinois.
On September 23, 1862, Hiram was sent to Vicksburg, Mississippi for a prisoner exchange.
Hiram was captured a second time at Port Hudson, Louisiana on July 9, 1863. He was paroled that same month (the day is not specified).
Hiram was captured a third time near Nashville, Tennessee on December 15, 1864. This would have been at the Battle of Nashville, Dec 15 - 16, 1864, a Confederate loss that ended the major battles west of the coastal states.
Hiram was sent to the military prison at Louisville, Kentucky, arriving by December 20, 1864.
On December 20, 1864, Hiram was sent to Camp Douglas, a POW camp in Chicago, Illinois.
Hiram was paroled from Camp Douglas and forwarded to City Point, Virginia, on March 14, 1865. He was paroled for the end of the war on May 24, 1865. He signed a Oath of Allegiance to the United States on May 26, 1965. His description is given on his oath:
