Church Records
Joris Juwel, y.m. born at Westchester married 3 June 1704 to Nettie De Groot, y.d. born at Ackinsack, in Hackensack, Bergen, New Jersey. [1]
George Jewell of Philipse Manor made his will November 17, 1759, and it was probated July 15, 1765. He mentions his wife, Martha, five sons, Staats, William, Abraham, Isaac, and John, and his two daughters, Sarah Downy and Rachel Lemater. By comparison with the Sleepy Hollow and Tappan records I identify him with Joris Juel or Juwel whose wife was Metje De Groot. It seems likely, therefore, that Martha was a second wife.
His children so far as could be determined were:
Sarah, bapt. Apr. 11, 1705, at Tappen. Sarah married William Downy (Donni or Douni) and had at least one child, Catharina, bapt. Apr. 23, 1734.
Mettie, bapt. Dec. 1, 1703, at Hackensack; Wit. Cornelia De Groot. [2]
John, bapt. Oct. 12, 1708, at Tappen;
Staedts, born Nov. 13, 1710, and bapt. Jan. 16, 1711, at Tappan;
Willem (William), bapt. Mar. 24, 1713, at Philipsburg. Wits. Laurens Bankert and Niestie his wife. [3] William married Elizabeth Boeckhout.
Isaac, bapt. Apr. 23, 1717, at Philipsburg;
Jan, bapt. June 21, 1720, at Philipsburg; Wits. Jeremiah Cennif and Anna his wife. [4]
Rachel, born about 1726 [uncertain] in Tarrytown, Greenburgh, Westchester, New York, Verenigde Staten van Amerika. Married Barent Delameter.
Abraham, birth unknown. Abraham married Sarah Boeckhout, sister of the above Elizabeth Broeckhout.
Note: The names so intimately associated in the records that there appears to be no doubt that they are all one family.
