Biography

Grace was born in or before 1744. She was baptised on 26 March 1744 in the parish of St Stephen in Brannel, Cornwall. Her parents were Richard Jewel and Elisabeth. [1]

Grace married John Hooper by banns on 28 March 1766 in St Stephen in Brannel. [2] Transcript of Marriage Banns: [3]

The banns of Marriage between John Hooper and Grace Jewel both of this parish were published Mar 9, 16, 23, 1766 by T Sutton.
The said John Hooper of this Parish Tinner and Grace Jewel of this parish Spinster were married in Church by Banns this 28th of March 1766 by me: Thos. Sutton Curate
This marriage was solemnized between us: John Hooper, The Sign of Grace Jewel
In the presence of Thos Crowle, Samuel ?Angilly

Grace and John appear to have had 3 children:

  • John, baptised 1766.
  • James, baptised 1769, married 1794 in St Mewan.
  • Ann, baptised 1772. married 1793 in St Mewan.

It is possible that they had a fourth child ten years later, baptised in the neighbouring parish of St Mewan:

  • Richard, baptised 1783 [4]

Grace's husband John died in 1803. The beneficiaries of his will (proved 3 Jun of that year) were his wife Grace, his son James, and his daughter Ann Vivyan. [5]

When the 1841 Census was taken, Grace was living at Henmoor in St Stephen with Francis Vivian, aged 45, a tailor, and Ann Hooke, aged 74. Her age was recorded as 105. [6]

Grace died in 1842 and was buried in St Stephen. Her residence at the time of her death was 'Newgate'. She was recorded as being 106 years old, which may have been a slight exaggeration, given her baptism was in 1744, but is not impossible. [7]

Research Notes

The Indenture - and who was Grace's father?
Grace is mentioned in an indenture between Richard Yelland and Philip Trethewy, dated 1803, which refers to a three-life lease taken out by a Richard Jewel on land belonging to the Boconnoc Estate in 1753 and an indenture for extension of the same in 1772. She is named as one of the lives on the lease, and is described as the 'said daughter of the said Richard Jewell, and now the wife of Hooper'. [8]

Grace's father Richard is probably either the Richard Jewell who died in 1807 or his father Richard who probably died in 1773. A 'Richard Jewell' was party to the 1753 and the 1772 indentures, but not the 1803 one, so it is possible that the signatory was either father or son.
