Wikipedia bio:

"Hugh Ambrose Jennings (April 2, 1869 – February 1, 1928) was a Major League Baseball player and manager from 1891 to 1925. Jennings was a leader, both as a batter and as a shortstop, with the Baltimore Orioles teams that won National League championships in 1894, 1895, and 1896. During those three seasons, Jennings had 355 runs batted in and hit .335, .386, and .401. Jennings was a fiery, hard-nosed player who was not afraid to be hit by a pitch to get on base. In 1896, he was hit by pitches 51 times – a major league record that has never been broken. Jennings also holds the career record for being hit by pitches with 287, with Craig Biggio (who retired in 2007) holding the modern-day career record of 285. Jennings also played on the Brooklyn Superbas teams that won National League pennants in 1899 and 1900. From 1907 to 1920, Jennings was the manager of the Detroit Tigers, where he was known for his colorful antics, hoots, whistles, and his famous shouts of "Ee-Yah" from the third base coaching box. Jennings suffered a nervous breakdown in 1925 that forced him to leave Major League Baseball. He died in 1928 and was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1945."

Hugh Ambrose Jennings was born in Pittston, Pennsylvania, in April of either 1869 or 1870. (Sources conflict, although 2 April 1869 is the date given in places such as Wikipedia and SABR.) His parents were James and Hannah Jennings, both born in Ireland. He married Elizabeth C. Dixon on 13 October 1897. Their daughter, Grace, was born in September, 1898, and Elizabeth died about two months later, on 26 November. Hugh married Nora M. O'Boyle on 10 January 1911. Their daughter Amelia was born on 18 December 1911 but died several weeks later, on 2 February 1912. Hugh died on 1 February 1928 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He is buried in Saint Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow, Pennsylvania.

Research Notes

  • The marriage license for Jennings and Elizabeth Dixon was issued 13 December 1897, but the date of the actual wedding was not recorded.
  • While 2 April 1869 is the birth date given in secondary sources, primary sources have a variety of dates--always April, but several dates in April, and the years 1869 and 1870. These sources include some, such as passport applications, completed by Jennings himself. The 1880 Census, taken in June, lists him as 10 years old, which indicates 1870.

I've added a profile for Hugh Jennings' daughter Grace (Jennings-6550), who married my grandmother's brother (McWilliams-1137). I'll be adding a profile for her mother (Jennings' first wife) Elizabeth Dixon. I also have some sources to add to this profile. None of this should touch the excellent work done on the baseball side of Jennings' life.
