He married Charlotte Harwood in 1848 in Portsea Island, Hampshire, England before they immigrated to Australia some time before the birth of their first child, Harry, in 1851. Harry was born on the Sandhurst goldfields, Victoria.
James was a manager for local grounds until he tendered his resignation in September 1866, when all such managers were requested to pay a bond.
This was only about two months before his death in November 1866.
(Bendigo Advertiser (Vic. : 1855 - 1918) Thu 6 Sep 1866 / Page 2 / HUNTLY SHIRE COUNCIL.) The resignation of James Jeal, manager of the Bagshot and Goornong Common was received. With reference to the resignations, the President said he was sorry to see such a wholesale resignation by the managers. From conversations he had with some of them, it appeared that they objected to binding themselves in the amount of £100, as required; if the amount was less it was probable there would be no objection. Cr Slade moved " That the bond be reduced to £25." Cr Britt thought it was too much to expect managers to work for nothing, and give bonds too. He thought the herdsman and manager who acted as secretary should give bonds. In his opinion bonds should only be taken from paid servants, and that he believed was the intention of the Act. Cr Nolan moved "That the President be authorised to communicate with tho managers, and report at the next meeting, and this was agreed to.[2]
