Emily was born June 9, 1895 in Hanover, Jo Daviess County Illinois, the second of two daughters to William Alexander Jameson and Elizabeth Vera Matchett. Soon after her birth she lost her father to complications from an emergency appendectomy. Emily and her sister, Jennie Marie grew up in the town of Hanover, Jo Daviess County Illinois where their father had owned a farm that continued to be farmed by her paternal Uncle, Samuel Craig Jameson. Emily was an excellent scholar and graduated at or near the top of her class from Monmouth College in Illinois where she met her future husband, Glen McGrew.
Glen taught school in the year after his graduation from Monmouth. Both Presbyterian, Glen and Emily were both people of deep faith.Glen originally considered going into the ministry, but Emily persuaded him that such was not his gift, and eventually he took a law degree instead, with support from Emily's uncle, Judge David Matchett of Chicago. They lived several years in the Chicago area and then moved to Elmhurst, Illinois and subsequently to Rensselaer, Indiana before eventually settling in New Castle, Indiana where Glen purchased an abstracting business. Once settled in New Castle, they converted to the Society of Friends and were for the remainder of their lives active in New Castle Friends Meeting, where Emily led a Sunday School class up until a few years before her death.
Emily was a particularly gentle, caring and gracious human being who lastingly influenced the people whose lives she touched. In the 1960's she and Glen were early proponents of civil rights, and for many years participated in an interracial faith group in New Castle. An avid reader, over a period of many years she also served as a literacy tutor in the New Castle seventh grade building. By the early 1970's she had become a small, frail woman, and in about 1974 Glen had begun to have mini-strokes that affected his balance. One day as she was helping him on with his coat, Glen lost his balance and fell back into her, knocking her over and breaking her hip. The subsequent surgery was successful, but in the recovery Emily suffered a major stroke and was never able to walk unassisted again. She eventually passed away Feb. 16, 1978 two years after Glen's own passing due to a massive stroke in 1976. [1]
