Biography

James Jackson was born April 3, 1767, in Surry County, North Carolina. As of 2017, his parentage and ancestry had not been determined.

A James Jackson, believed to be this person, is found on the 1800 Census roll in Salisbury, Surry Co., NC, and again on the 1810 Surry County Census.

James married Rachel Bills, a member of a family that had been Quakers for several generations. This area of western North Carolina had attracted many Quaker settlers moving south from Pennsylvania in search of cheaper land. Among them were the Bills family. Whether James was a member of the Quaker faith has not been determined, but his wife, her parents and her siblings all appear on the Friends Meetings rolls.

The state of Tennessee was formed out of the western portion of North Carolina and admitted into the Union in 1796. The Tennessee General Assembly established Maury County on 16 Nov 1807. Columbia, the county seat, was laid out and lots sold in 1808.[1]

In 1808, Rachel’s brother, Isaac Newton Bills, bought property in Tennessee and in 1809 moved to Maury Co., TN. In about 1813. Rachel’s father and several other families, including James and Rachel, moved to Tennessee, joining Isaac Newton Bills there. Daniel Bills bought property on Globe Creek in the Middle District of Tennessee in 1814. In 1818, Rachel’s husband, James Jackson, bought an adjoining tract.

James and Rachel continued to live in that area the rest of their lives. County lines changed a number of times, so records are found in Maury, Marshall and Giles counties.

U.S. Census records show James and Rachel’s residences as:

1810 – Surry Co., NC
1820 – Maury Co., TN
1830 - Maury Co., TN
1840 – Marshall Co., TN
1850 – Marshall Co., TN

The couple had three known children and perhaps others. Son Isaac P. Jackson was born in Surry County, NC, on June 30, 1801. Son Thomas G. Jackson was born in Surry Co. on Aug. 27, 1805. Daughter Sally L. Jackson was born in North Carolina on Nov. 6, 1807.

Isaac and Sally, along with their families, continued to reside in Tennessee. Thomas and his family moved to Texas in early 1851. All three of these children of James and Rachel Jackson became members of the Christian Church (Church of Christ).

In the 1850 Census, James and Rachel (ages 83 and 72) were living in Marshall Co., TN, along with six other individuals, including their granddaughter, Sally J. Tillman

A good summary of this family appears in the Marshal County Historical Quarterly, Summer 1985.

James died Sept. 3, 1851, at the age of 84 and is buried in the Houston Cemetery in Maury Co., TN. In the same part of the cemetery are his wife Rachel and her parents, Daniel and Deborah Bills.
