Biography

William Jack was born in February 1881 in the Maryhill district of Glasgow. He was the son of William Jack and Georgina Clezy.

The 1891 UK census at Glasgow showed "William C. Jack", age 8. Was it the same person? Unknown. The initial C. could have stood for his mother's maiden name, Clezy but that is unclear. The same census showed another "William Jack", age 10, lived in the Maryhill district of Glasgow. So identification remains in doubt.

In 1900 William Jack, age 18, enlisted in the Army Service Corps, which was responsible for keeping the British army supplied with provisions. Again, was it the correct person? That seems likely since he worked for much of his lifetime as a butcher.

William Jack was then shown in the 1901 census in Govan, Glasgow. But was it this same William Jack or some other? Unclear. This is what results when a common name is used by more than one person, without adequate information to tell them apart.

One newspaper record has been found, showing that William and his brother Archibald worked together at butchers, then later went their separate ways:

"The Firm of A. & W. JACK, Butchers, 55 Raeberry Street, Glasgow, of which the Subscribers were the sole Partners, was DISSOLVED, by mutual consent, on 1st March 1920.
 Since that date the Subscriber Archibald Jack has carried on business and will continue to carry on business on his own account at 55 Raeberry Street aforesaid, and the Subscriber William Jack has carried on business and will continue to carry on business on his own account at 665 Garscube Road, Glasgow."

No record has yet been found of his death.
