On 31 May 1854 James married Mary Hancock. Their marriage took place at Welford on Avon in Warwickshire and was witnessed by John Hickman and Elizabeth Hancock. Mary was described as being of Little Dorsington. [4]
Soon after their marriage James and Mary moved to Norwood, London where James started his own Chemist store. The family lived for about 25 years above the shop in Church Road also known as Westlow Hill. [5]
Between 1871 and 1881 James moved his family to a smart three story Victorian villa called "Roma" at 26 Belvedere Rd in Norwood; one of the best streets in the area. [7]
James died on 31 Oct 1913. He was buried alongside Mary in the Crystal Palace District Cemetery, now known as the Beckenham Cemetery. [12]
