The Commerce Record
To the tune of clicking typewriters, the Journal staff in room 116 worked together to put out the Journal. Pictures were taken and retaken; stories written again and again. Reporters dashed around school getting pictures identified and digging up information.
With the material coming in, sometimes slow, sometimes fast, the book began to take shape. The deadline was met. Then there were the nights spent at the printers proof reading and doing paste-ups. Missing picture and stories presented their pitfalls.
No, the Journal wasn’t enough to worry about, we had to have the carnival too. This was the time to be gay and light hearted. The journalism group added its booth to the colorful concessions already crowding the courtyard. The Journalism Booth sold blue and white yarn dolls for three tickets each, or seven and one half cents.[2]
Wedding Announcement
MISSION INN RITES - Charlene Iveson and Jack Raber Wed
Raber-lveson Rites Read In Mission Inn Ceremony
Thirty-five relatives and intimate friends of Miss Charlene Sue Iveson and Jack Edward Raber gathered in the lovely St. Francis chapel at the Mission Inn, Riverside, Jan. 26 (1951) to witness double ring rites scaling the vows of the young couple.
Appropriate wedding selections were played on the organ before the ceremony, which was read at 8 p.m. by the Rev. William Barker.
Preceding the bride down the aisle was her only attendant, a cousin, Mrs. Chris Kumnick of Riverside. Mrs. Kumnick wore a beige print gown and carried a bouquet of pink carnations.
The attractive blonde bride was given in marriage by her uncle, Fred C. Stone. She chose an all-white costume, featuring a lace ballerina - length gown worn over satin. Her Juliet cap was of matching lace with ruffled trim and seed pearl detail. She also wore matching lace mitts and white nylon slippers. Her flowers were white carnations centered by a white orchid.
James Wheeler attended Mr. Raber as best man. After the wedding, the guests gathered at the home of the bridegroom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. George E. Raber, 2015 Arrowhead avenue, for a reception. The wedding pair h o n e y m o o n e d in Palm Springs before returning to San Bernardino to make their home at 1255 D street.
Mrs. Raber attended the High School of Commerce in San Francisco. She was born in San Bernardino and attended elementary schools in this community before moving to San Francisco. She is the daughter of Mrs. Midge Iveson, 1331 E street. The bride is employed at the American National bank.
Mr. Raber attended San Bernardino High school before he enrolled at the University of Texas for three years of study. He graduated from the University of Southern California and is now associated with his father at the Raber mill.[3]

Charlene Iveson Castle Miles was born on June 4, 1931 in Colton, CA. She passed away on March 23, 2013 in San Bernardino, CA.[4][5][6]
25 December 2014: The above notation on my mother hardly scratches the surface of her life. When I think of writing something about her here, a whole bevy of emotions well up. But I will come occasionally to write something of her, as the Spirit moves me.
My Mother
7 November 2015: As a writer, I have sometimes found myself knocking up against writers block, such as I have had for writing about my mother's life. At first, I didn't think I had anything at all to say, but now I do.
My mother was five times married (the third time I don't even have the name of the guy, as they were married only a few days), and the last being the most successful. My mother divorced my father when I was a baby, and I never used my birth name[36], and even prefer my adoptive maiden name, Castle, to this day.
In many ways my mother had to fill the masculine roll, while our grandmother became, in a sense, our mother. One thing I clearly recall is her going to bat for us during our school years, either with other school kids, but more often than not with the administration.
Because of my mother, I learned many more things than other first children, and especially so for a female first child. I still love to haunt tool shops, and other places like Lowe's or Home Depot. Through her, I learned how to keep a yard, and had my first instructions in horticulture. Later we learned to build things, and with the help of a knowledgeable neighbor, tackled putting up an extension to our home. But even during that same time, I learned how to keep house through my grandmother. Yet, when it came to sewing, I once again turned to my mother. I would like to add that she made a lot of our clothes, as she was an accomplished seamstress.
One strong memory I have of her is when I saw a typewriter in her bedroom, and the beginnings of a manuscript. She was a frustrated writer, with too many other pursuits. But some of my most memorable critiques were made by her. On more than one occasion, a paper was returned to me totally thrashed, all lined in red pen with marginal notations. No English teacher would have been more severe.
Although her interests were quite varied, and her true talents untilled, she was never to finish a one of them. But I think the one thing she did the best was to raise us kids. We are all upstanding members of the community. But while we haven't run for office, or really achieved anything great, we are what you might call "good people." And that is the best legacy any parent can have.
Gift Wrapping
The Black Stallion
14 Dec 2015: Today, as I was showing my gift-wrap challenged son, Matthew, how to successfully wrap all of his gifts for this year, I recalled to mind how my mother taught me all the finer points of wrapping. I told my son that my Mom began teaching me when I was at the ripe old age of 7 years. She showed me how to wrap, pre-folding out the paper before the actual deeds of cutting, and taping. My son laughed, "Well, I'm not too far off - being 22 years old!"
I remember all the Christmases, the wrapping, the cursing as it neared midnight, almost Christmas morn, to get it all done and under the tree for the children to open on Christmas Day.
I, like the young boy of the Christmas Story, wanted something very special that year. But as my mother wrapped gifts on the kitchen table top, I being her Santa's elf, saw no hint of it. I had begged, implored, and wished so much for a horse story, The Black Stallion, by Walter Farley. But I knew that year, we really didn't have a whole lot of money. My little sister had just turned 2, and my brother was 7. Nevertheless, I held out - hope against hope - for a miracle to occur. I had poured over the Sears catalog for weeks, oogling over the splendid pictures of the The Black Stallion series. But I only wanted one - the very first. But, I understood why I wasn't going to get it, and went to bed as usual. But, I was still restless, eager for Christmas Day, and our planned festivities.
The house was dark and quiet - all were asleep, except for myself. I slipped out of bed, ostensibly to go to the bathroom. But as I passed the doorway to the living room, I couldn't resist a peek. I crept out to the little Christmas tree. The colorful lights of the tree were still on, and I could just make out what was there. Under the tree were the presents my mother had struggled to wrap mere hours before. But I noticed a solitary unwrapped gift on top of the neat pile. I looked, and in amazement, saw the book. The Back Stallion, in all its glory! The dust cover was unblemished, unlike all the other library book editions I had borrowed. I was ecstatic! I quietly went back to bed, slipping back into the covers. But I had trouble going back to sleep.
Somehow, but I don't know how, I finally fell asleep, my curiosity now being satiated. In the morning my Mom and Grandma called us to wake and open our presents. I do not rightly recall all we said and did that morning. But I will never forget waking early Christmas morn to find my much sought after gift. Thank you, Mama. Thank you, Gommy[37]. I will always love you both.[38]
San Francisco
17 Nov 2019: For a short while following World War II, my grandmother and mother lived in San Francisco. My mother completed her education then, high school. She said she was really in the minority, as there were many more oriental kids attending. There were also many Russian kids there as while.
My mother told us about her days there, and how she learned to eat chicken noodle soup with chop sticks when she went home for lunch each day. Because of her, we all learned to use chop sticks at an early age. She and my grandmother introduced us to Chinese food. I have ever after had a life time love of Chinese and Japanese food.
My Mom also made aside-social commentary (not really intending to) when she talked about how she would step over bums, sleeping on the walkways, on her way to school. Some things never change.
I think it is my understanding that the reason Mama wanted to return to San Bernardino, is because she missed her friends. That seems to have been the deciding factor for their return. There were other reasons, for sure, but that will be another story altogether.
