John Rice Irwin (December 11, 1930 – January 16, 2022) was an American cultural historian, and founder of the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, Tennessee.
John Rice Irwin, noted historian and preservationist, was born on an East Tennessee farm in 1930.
A teacher, school superintendent, author, and publisher, he devoted his life to preserving the cultural heritage of southern Appalachia. In 1969 he founded the Museum of Appalachia in Norris, TN.
He was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 1989 and received honorary doctoral degrees from several universities for his pioneering work.
