Biography

Melcena was born to Thomas Irvine II and Tabitha Meredith Clark in Mount Vernon, Ohio, on 30 October 1818 ^{[1] [2]}. She married George Payne O'Neill I in Knox County, Ohio, on 16 May 1838 ^{[3] [4]}. Prior to 1860, her husband abandoned her and their children, and she relocated to Chicago, Illinois, prior to 1865 ^{[5] [6] [7]}. The family lived in the city until the Great Chicago Fire forced them to relocate to several temporary residences in the 1870s ^{[8] [9] [10]}.

Melcena died in Chicago, Illinois, on 22 January 1891 ^{[11] [12]} .
