MG Merritte Ireland from the Marine Corps was the Chief Surgeon of the American Expeditionary Forces. He had been commissioned as a surgeon into the Medical Corps in 1903. General Pershing chose Lieutenant Colonel Ireland as his Chief Surgeon. Ireland went on to become Surgeon General after William Gorgas, who served in that capacity throughout World War I. Other key positions Ireland held were as 13th President, American College of Surgeons (ACS) and then as United States Surgeon General from 1918 to 1931.
Merritte Ireland is buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Grave 3102, Section 4. His wife, Elizabeth Liggett Ireland (1867–1961) is buried there, too; her grave description is Sec: 4, Site: 3102LH.
