Daniel Inouye was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on 7 September 1924, the son of Hyotaro Inouye from Japan and Kame Imanaga of Japanese descent.

U.S. Senator

Senator Daniel Inouye served as a United States Senator (representing Hawaii) from 1963 - 2012, and was the first person to hold that position from Hawaii. He held numerous important positions while in Congress, and never lost an election. He was the President pro tempore of the United States Senate. He was the first Japanese American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and the first Japanese American to serve in the U.S. Senate.

Military Service

He was a highly decorated war hero (44th Infantry Regiment), having received the Medal of Honor, the Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart (he lost an arm in WW II). He received a battlefield commission to 2nd Lieutenant for his performance in the Vosges Mountains in eastern France. He was a lifelong friend of Senators Bob Dole and Phillip Hart, having met them during the war.

Death

Inouye's body lay in state at the United States Capitol rotunda on December 20, 2012; It was the 31st time that someone had been so honored, and the first Asian-American. Presidents Obama and Clinton, Vice President Biden and Speaker of the House John Boehner spoke at his funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral on December 21. Inouye's body was flown to Hawaii where it lay in state at the Hawaii State Capitol on December 22. A second funeral service was held at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu the following day
