Disappearance

In 1895, James was last seen at Jennie's funeral. He disappeared after her funeral and was never seen or heard from again. James' parents and siblings didn't even see or hear from him again. The three children were raised by their grandmother, Mary Katherine Spoon-Hazelwood. Mary Katherine was a widow.

In the 1970's, an Inman family member sent a letter to the Veterans Administration and found out a little information about James.

In the 2000's, Thanks to the internet, people have been doing genealogical research on James and the Inmans'. The people that are doing research on the internet found out a lot more information about James.

Findings

After disappearing from Jennie's funeral, James went to Anderson County, Tennessee. In 1898, He married his second wife, Rosa McQueen and they had two children: Lealon and Hutson. They also had a daughter, Flora, that died when she was nine years old. Rosa died sometime in the early 1900's. Rosa had no idea he was previously married with young children.

In 1905, James married Catherine (Cassie) Ward in Campbell County, Tennessee. They had four children: Sam, Richard, Burgon, and Maggie.

When James married Catherine, she didn't know he had two sons: Hutson and Lealon Inman. James had left one day and returned later with his two sons. Catherine and James did raise them with their other four children that they had together. Lealon died and Hutson was still raised by Catherine and James. Catherine didn't know he had been married twice before.

In 1906, there was a marriage license for James and Miss Mattie White. It was wrote across a license. The license was returned and not used. They were never married.

James died in 1917 and Catherine Ward filed for his pension. Catherine raised their four children and Hutson after James' death. Catherine never knew about his previous marriages, especially the first wife and children.

Notes

  • It has been said that James went AWOL during his war service and put in prison for a short time. I haven't been able to find proof of this.
