Biography

Norfolk King was born 8 January 1789 on Norfolk Island. He was the first child born on Norfolk Island. His parents were Lieutenant Phillip Gidley King, HMS Sirius 1788 and Ann Inett, convict, Lady Penrhyn 1788.

Both his parents had arrived on Norfolk Island aboard HM Supply in March 1788 to establish a settlement. In January 1789 his father wrote in his journal: The 8th ushered a male child into the world, and as he was the first born on the island, he was baptized by the name of Norfolk.

Norfolk King left Norfolk island with his parents aboard HM Supply in March 1790, recorded as "Norfolk King Inett" in the shipping muster. He stayed in Sydney with the mother Ann Inett, whilst Phillip Gidley King went to England.

Phillip Gidley King returned to NSW aboard HMS Gorgon in September 1791 to take back on the role of Commandant of Norfolk Island. With him was his new wife Anna Josepha Coombe, whom he had married in March 1791 at Devon England.

They travelled to Norfolk Island aboard the Atlantic, arriving in November 1791. With them were King’s two natural children by Ann Inett, Norfolk King (b1789 Norfolk Island) and Sydney King (b1790 Sydney).

On 1 January 1795, at the age of seven years, his father granted Norfolk 50 acres of land on Norfolk Island, this being Lot 99, which today is located at the north west end of the airport runway.

Phillip King sent his son Norfolk King back to England aboard the Marquis Cornwallis in 1796. Phillip King who was suffering from gout returned with his family to England aboard the Britannia in October 1796.

Norfolk King was educated in England. He became a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy. Norfolk married Philadelphia Montague in 1820 in London. He died 26 October 1839, age 50 years, in Stepney, Middlesex, England.
