George Elmore Ide was born on 06 December 1845 in Zanesville, OH, to Dr. William E. and Angeline Sullivan Ide.
He entered the U. S. Naval Academy in 1861. During the summers of 1862-1864, while a midshipman, he cruised after the Confederate steamers Tallahassee and Florida.
He went to Greenland on USS Juniata in 1870, in search of Polaris survivors, and same year took Virginius filibusterers from Santiago, Cuba, to New York. He served on various ships, including USS Kenosha, which in 1871 escorted the English battleship Monarch to Portland, ME, carrying the body of philanthropist George Peabody; commanded the U. S. steamer Justin off Santiago, during the Spanish-American War; took U. S. steamer Yosemite to Guam in 1889, carrying governor of Island, and surveyed the harbor in view of making it a cable and coaling station; in 1900 commanded U. S. steamship New Orleans on Mare Island, CA., as Captain of Yard. He retired as Rear-Admiral, on September 26, 1901, after forty years of service.
Member of Metropolitan, City, N. Y. Athletic and N. Y. Yacht Clubs, and the Son of the American Revolution. Lived on Madison Avenue, New York City.[1]

Ide married Alexandra Louise Bruen on 28 July 1889 at Fortress Monroe, VA.
Death and Burial
Rear Admiral George Elmore Ide died on 12 February 1917. He is buried at John Jay Cemetery, Rye, Westchester Co., New York.
