Adah F Johnson was born 27 February 1891, the daughter of Robert N Hyde (born Oct 1853 in Virginia) and Lyda (born Nov 1859 in Missouri).[1]
In 1909 she lived at 421 N Dubuque, Iowa City. Black students could not live on campus at the time.[2]
In 1912, she (along with Letta Cary) was one the first two black women to graduate from the State University of Iowa.[3] She taught school in Indiana, West Virginia and Arkansas. Later she was a program directory for senior citizens at Willkie House in Des Moines, and was the director of the negro branch of the YWCA.[4][5]
Throughout the 1910s, she was active with African-American alumni of the University, serving as secretary of the group and speaking at events.[6][7][8][9]
In 1921, she was a teacher living at 821 13th, Des Moines, Iowa.[10]
Adah married Fred Harrison Johnson (son of Washington Johnson and Cynthia Hayes) on 17 March 1923 in Polk County, Iowa.[11]
Adah died 3 February 1988 and is buried at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.[12][13][14]
