Biography

Joseph was born in 1788. He was the son of John Hyde and Sarah Wharton.

He married Elizabeth Evans in 1805.[1]

He was a weaver by trade and in 1840, was convicted of stealing some cloth and sentenced to 7 years in Australia. He arrived in the colony of Tasmania on the Lady Raffles in November 1840. [2]Joseph's eldest son Richard together with Richard's wife and children had migrated to Australia in 1837/1838 and his daughter Sarah and younger son William also ended up migrating to Australia. Joseph's wife and daughter Ann remained in Gloucestershire and he may have had other children who remained in Gloucester as well.

Joseph settled in South Australia after he had done his time.

He passed away in 1852. [3]
