William Hutton was the oldest son of Anthony Hutton of Melmerby and Penrith, Cumberland, and Elizabeth Musgrave. [1] [2]No baptismal record has been found for him, but his younger brother Richard Hutton was baptised in May 1561, so he was born before that date.
His first wife was Jane Vaux, daughter of Rowland Vaux,[3] by whom he had two sons, Thomas and William, both of whom apparently predeceased him without heirs,[4] and a daughter Anne, wife of Christopher Dalston.[5]
His second wife Dorothy has been identified as a Benson, but their marriage record on 14 February 1579/80 [6]calls her Mrs. Dorothy Williamson, so she was possibly a widow. The Registers at St. Andrew's Church, Penrith, include six sons born to William after 1580, including his oldest son Anthony ( who was baptised at Melmerby in 1582), Richard, Geratt, Barnard, Lancelot, and a second Richard. [7]Another son John (not baptised at Penrith) is mentioned in his Will. He also apparently had at least two daughters by his second wife, who are mentioned in his father's 1590 Will as "two youngest sisters" of William's sons.[2]
William took an active part in Border affairs, serving as sheriff of Cumberland in 1603 and 1609, and he was knighted by King James in 1604.[4][8]
Sir William Hutton wrote his Will on 6 October 1623. He asks to be buried in St. Andrews quire. His son Anthony and his wife Elizabeth have been given land entailed on heirs male and son John has been given land entailed on heirs male. He mentions his wife Dorothie and granddaughter Dorothie Musgrave (100 lbs to be paid after her marriage). Witnesses are Christopher Dalston, Barnard Hutton, Jon Hutton, John Musgrave[9]
He was buried at Penrith on 9 October 1623.[10]
While William's second wife is called Dorothy Williamson in their marriage record, the fact that the marriage took place at Grasmere church is a good indication that she was a Benson. Nicholson and Burn say that there is a place in Grasmere called Fold House, which belonged to the family of Benson. The last of that name, Bernard Benson, married a daughter of Gilpin of Kentmere and had four daughters as heirs, one of whom married Judge Hutton [apparently confusing Sir William with his brother Richard, the judge.] Another daughter married James Brathwaite of Ambleside.[11] In her 1673 Will, Elizabeth Hutton, the widow of Sir William's son Anthony, mentions a cousin Thomas Braithwaite, who is shown in the accompanying pedigree as the grandson of James Braithwaite of Ambleside and his wife Joyce Benson.[5]
