Biography

John Hutton was born about 1690 in Cavan, Ireland. He is the son of Thomas Hutton.

John Hutton of New Garden county of Chester province of "Pensilvania" and Sarah Lightfoot daughter of Michael Lightfoot of New Garden accomplishing their sd intentions this 25th day of 4th mo 1724…witness Michaell Lightfoot, Mary Lightfoot, Joseph Hutton, Nehemiah Hutton, Benj Fredd, James Miller, Rachel Miller Mary Hutton.[1] After their marriage, John and Sarah moved or changed their Quaker meeting place several times.

Albert Cook Myers published in his book, Immigration of the Irish Quakers into Pennsylvania, 1682-1750, a series of letters written by Thomas Hutton of Carlow, County Carlow, Ireland.[2] One of the letters mentioned several sons, and other families and should be noted. The letter noted as No. 1 and transcribed as printed was:

  • .Carlo, 6 mos 20, 1726.
  • To children Joseph, Nehemiah, and John Hutton, New Garden Township, Chester Co., PA.
  • Letters dated 12 mo. 20, last, have been received. "Wm. Malones family yt now is in ye small pox himself and 3 of his children but is likely to get over it except little Tom." Let James Starr and his wife hear this letter. "I cannot get your sisters with their husbands in mind to come to you & they are hard set to pay what they ow and So is Sam White his children is all got over ye small pox Samuel Wattsons wife is dead. She was an honest concerned friend Bro: Russel & his children are all well Sam Laybourn wife & his 2 sons is well," etc. "We have a good harvest time as ever I remember, but had a great wind ye last day or 2 of last month which did shake much corn & frute land is very deer & Corn Cheap at present as also woll, but cattle gives a good price. I desire you to remember my love to my relations and friends ye went hence as if I had named them one by one for they are often with you in my mind and so shall conclude with my deare love once more to you my dear Children & bids you farewell in yt which Changes not." On the 27th of October 1729 Michael Lightfoot of New Garden Chester county weaver & Mary, his wife, sold to John Hutton of the same place, taylor, in consideration of £49 one hundred acres of land in New Garden which was part of a great tract of 300 acres granted unto Michael Lightfoot by William Penn, Jnr. on 1 Dec 1713.[3] This lease and release deed was recorded 26 July 1746. Michael Lightfoot] yeoman and Mary his wife sold another 200 acres of land to John Hutton yeoman being land sold to Michael Lightfoot] by Joseph Wily and Abigail, his wife, on the 5th of April 1721.[4]

The Goshen Monthly Meeting held 15th of the 2nd month 1745 in Chester County, Pennsylvania recorded:

  • John Hutton and Sarah his wife for a certificate to Philadelphia Monthly Meeting they having resided but a short time within the limits of this Monthly Meeting, Noble Butler and Hugh Pugh appointed to enquire...

At the meeting held 20th day of the 3rd month 1745,

  • "...circumstance of John Hutton reports that they found things well respecting the same…and according a certificate was endorsed for him and his wife: on the certificate they lately produced here from New Garden Monthly Meeting which is directed to Philadelphia Monthly Meeting.[5]

John Hutton of New Garden, taylor, and Sarah his wife sold to William Jackson of London Grove township, yeoman, 200 acres of land on the 27th of the 4th month 1752 which was formerly granted to William Penn, Jr. [6]

The family migrated to Loudoun County Virginia where John died in 1772. John Hutton of Loudoun County and Colony of Virginia set his hand and seal to his Last Will and Testament on the 24th day of November 1771 bequeathing:

unto my son John Hutton five shillings
unto my son Joseph Hutton five shillings
unto granddaughter Sarah Hutton Daughter of Thomas one cow, one yearling and one calfe
unto Catherine Edwards ten shillings
unto beloved wife, Sarah Hutton my land and all the remainder of my other estate for her proper use and at her death be be disposed of[7]

He appointed Sarah as the Executrix. The will was proved in court on the 9th day of March 1772.

John died between the 24th of November 1771 (dated will was written) and the 9th of March 1772 (date will was proved.)
