Matthew was baptised 8 January 1692, the second son of John Hutton and Dorothy (Dyke) Hutton.^[1][2] On 12 Mar 1731 he married Mary Lutman, the daughter of John Lutman from Petworth, Sussex, England.^[3] They had two daughters^[4]:

Matthew Hutton followed in the footsteps of many of his relatives by matriculating at Cambridge University. In 1713 he received his B.A. from Jesus College of Cambridge, followed by an M.A. in 1717, when he became a fellow of Christ's College. In 1726 he was the rector of Trowbridge in Wiltshire, and also a private chaplain to the Duke of Somerset. He received his D.D. degree in 1728, and in 1729 became rector of Spofforth in Yorkshire. On 18 May 1734 he was appointed prebendary of York. In 1736, as one of the royal chaplains, he accompanied George II to Hanover. On 27 March 1736 Matthew Hutton was installed as canon of Windsor, and on 18 May 1739 he became prebendary of Westminster. On 13 November 1743 he was appointed Bishop of Bangor. He became the Archbishop of York on 28 November 1747, and almost ten years later--on 13 April 1757--was appointed Archbishop of Canterbury.^[5]

Matthew Hutton died 18 March 1758 at his house in Duke Street, and was buried 27 March 1758 in a vault in the chancel of Lambeth Church.^[6][7]
