David Hutton was born in Scotland.
David was born to Andrew Hutton and Cecelia Tullideph in Cults, Fife, in 1766. [1]
There is a series of letters in the archives of St. Andrews University pertaining to David:
31 January 1789 -- Autograph letter signed, George Hill, later Principal of St Mary's College, University of St Andrews, to the Hon Lt Gen Alexander Leslie -- Reporting the illness of [Cecily] Tullideph, wife of the minister of Kilmany [Fife], and her anxiety over her second son, David Hutton, unemployed due to nervous disorder. She is to be moved to her sister's house in St Andrews. Mr [Henry ?] Dundas [later 1st Viscount Melville] would be sure to help, but not possible to write to him at present. Asks if Leslie could find a job for the boy. -- Signed Geo Hill. St Andrews, 31 January 1789. [2]
9 February 1789 -- Description Autograph letter signed, The Hon Lt Gen Alexander Leslie, brother of the 6th Earl of Leven and Melville, to George Hill, later Principal of St Mary's College, University of St Andrews. -- Leslie is affected by bile. He will do the utmost to help the Tullideph family. Mr Henry Dundas [later 1st Viscount Melville] may still be able to help. Notes the death of Sir John St Clair, [Bt of Murkle]. -- Signed A Leslie Beechwood, 9 February 1789. [3]
14 April 1789 Autograph letter signed, George Hill, later Principal of St Mary's College, University of St Andrews, to an unknown recipient. -- Seeking employment for David Hutton, son of the minister of Kilmany, who is well qualified to be a land-waiter. His mother, [Cecily] Tullideph, died during the winter and he encloses a reply from [The Hon Lt Gen] Alexander Leslie, brother of the 6th Earl of Leven and Melville, on the subject. He requests the addressee to mention the matter to Henry Dundas [later 1st Viscount Melville] at own discretion. -- Signed Geo Hill St Andrews, 14 April 1789. [4]
7 February 1799 Autograph letter, signed, George Hill, Principal of St Mary's College, University of St Andrews, to Henry Dundas, later 1st Viscount Melville -- Enclosing a memorial [ms4780] concerning David Hutton, son of the minister of Kilmany [Fife] now totally disabled by an increasing epilepsy and residing with Robert Tullideph, son of Principal Tullideph, a farmer in the parish of Scoonie or Leven [Fife]. Tullideph family in much reduced circumstances. -- Signed Geo Hill. St Andrews, 7 February 1799. [5]
4 September 1799 Memorial of David Swan, minister of Scoonie, Leven and James Brydone, surgeon of Leven, Fife. --David Hutton, son of the minister of Kilmany [Fife] is attested a fit subject for admission to the Royal Naval Hospital, Greenwich. Details given of his naval career. Endorsed with the supporting testimony of James Flint [Professor of Medicine in United College, University of St Andrews]. -- Signed: David Swan and James Brydone Scoonie Manse, 4 September 1799.
28 April 1799 Autograph letter signed, George Hill, Principal of St Mary's College, University of St Andrews. -- To [Henry Dundas, later 1st Viscount Melville] seeking news of David Hutton, son of the minister of Kilmany [Fife], departed to London to seek admission to the Royal Naval Hospital, Greenwich. -- Signed Geo Hill. St Mary's College, University of St Andrews, 28 April 1799. [6]
David Hutton RN College man
David was admitted to the Royal Naval Hospital Greenwich on April 27th 1799. His admittance record states that he had served 7 years in the Navy and received a severe head wound to the right side of his head when serving aboard the Defence. His last ship had been the Victor. He was unmarried and his home town was "Cowper of Fife". [7]  :He died March 5th 1812. [8][9]
