Obituary
WINCHELSEA. FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT). Tuesday. The old colonists are one by one de parting, and by the death of Mr James Hunter, who died at his residence Wurdi boluc on Tuesday last, another old identity is removed from the roll of the living. The deceased, who has been in failing health for some time, reached the age of 88 years, having been born in Yorkshire in the year 1808. His earliest recollections carried him back to the heroic Battle of Waterloo, and the stirring scones of that period. Landing in the colonies in 1834, the year of tho estab lishment of a whaling station at Portland by the Messrs Heuty, Mr Hunter can safely he classed as one of our very earliest colonists. Few now liv ing can claim a connection of 62 years, dating back to the initial stage of Victorian history. Upright and honor able in ail his dealings, large-hearted to a fault, he has ever acted up to the highest ideal of man's existence, and leaves an untarnished name after 41 years' residence in Wurdibolnc. He leaves a largo grown-up family, all of whom aro married and well provided for. The funeral was largely attended, old colonists being well represented. The Church of England service was read over tho grave, the Rev. W. JJaxwoll, being the officiating clergyman.[11]
