Michael John Hunkin was born on 23 Dec 1926 in Atbara, Nahr an Nīl, Sudan, son of Frederick Stanley Hunkin O.M. (1883 - 1961) and Dorothy Beatrice (Mondy) Hunkin (1893 - 1959).

His brother was Stanley Colin Hunkin (1921 - 1924).

Michael married Judith Ann Walkinton (1930 - living) on 2 Oct 1954 in Holderness. Their children were:
