Edward Hunkin was born on 19 September 1902 in Pago Pago, Mauputasi, Eastern, American, Samoa, son of Jack Siaki Ma'Ilo Hunkin (1862–1925) and Tusiga Leauga Lei'Ataua (1866–1950).
