At age 7, the future Patricia Hunkin Coakley Lineberger strode across a catwalk high above the Grand Coulee Dam. At 65, she kept her cool during a fire that prevented her second wedding reception. She was a well-exhibited painter, a civic leader, chairwoman of a state commission and frequent hostess for musical stars. Lineberger died Sept. 25 at Hillcrest Hospital after several years of struggle with diabetes and Parkinson's disease. She was 82. "She had great charm without arrogance," said Lanie Hadden, a friend since their Laurel School days. "Even in the last few years, when she couldn't tolerate light, she lit up people's lives." She was born on St. Patrick's Day, which inspired her first name. Her grandfather and father were contractors of Washington State's Coulee Dam, Laurel School, Detroit-Superior Bridge, Municipal Stadium, Pennsylvania Turnpike and more, often with young Patsy in tow. She was raised in Pepper Pike and Cleveland. She graduated from Briarcliff College, N.Y., and the Pardon School of Specialist Decoration in London. She painted bright, loose exterior scenes for solo shows in Cleveland and New York. She also made picture frames and furniture. In 1981, she became chair of art purchases for state buildings. She was also a trustee of Laurel, Goodrich-Gannett Neighborhood Center, Cleveland Botanical Garden and the local Planned Parenthood. She lived in Shaker Heights and Kirtland Hills before Gates Mills. She often hosted celebrities, including Duke Ellington, Bobby Short, Leopold Stokowski and Bill Veeck. She outlived two husbands, Joseph C. Coakley, chairman of Union Commerce Bank, and Walter F. Lineberger, chairman emeritus of Key Bank. In 1994, her second wedding reception at the Chagrin Valley Hunt Club was just beginning when a blaze forced guests, many without coats or car keys, into a sub-zero evening. No one was hurt, and the newlyweds promptly left for a honeymoon in Hawaii. Survivors include three of her four children, two step-sons and 10 grandchildren. A memorial service will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, at St. Christopher's-by-the-River Episcopal Church. Stroud-Lawrence is handling her arrangements.[3]
