The information Robert has given is not accurate, he is not a widower, his first wife is still living, they are not divorced. This is a bigamous marriage. Have they married in Almondsbury to avoid attention?

The 1911 Census record says that Priscilla had 14 live births 8 of whom were still living and 6 had died. She was living with her daughter Alice and her son-in-law in the same house she and her husband Robert had moved to between the 1881 and 1891 censuses.

Research notes Robert Backwell married Priscilla (Hulin) Cole bigamously, he was still married to Harriet Ponting. All Priscilla's children from 1855 are recognised as Robert Backwell's offspring and this is recorded on their baptismal records, the census records and on the death records for those who died in infancy (apart from Henry). We have not been able to find birth registration records for all their children. Where there are birth registration records some of them, if not all, only give Priscilla's maiden name (Hulin) and married name form her first marriage (Cole). This is presumably because of the nature of the couple's marriage. However it is clear that the family would regard Backwell as their surname at birth.
