Biography

Albin Hulett was born in June 1849 in New York, USA. His parents were John Hulett and Elizabeth Bryant. He married Clarissa Ellis on December 25, 1875. Together they had 8 children:

  1. Lillian Hulett
  2. Henry Hulet
  3. Albin Hulet
  4. Lester Hulet
  5. Myrtle Hulet
  6. Etta Hulet
  7. Nettie Hulet
  8. Eva Hulet

He died on February 15, 1928, in Vancouver Clark County Washington, USA.

Albin Hulet was born IN DeKalb, St. Lawrence County, NY to John Hulett Sr. and John's second wife Elizabeth Bryant. He moved with his family to Traverse County, Michigan, and in 1862 he was granted a homestead of 160 acres in Hanover Township, Wexford County, Michigan.

On Christmas Day in 1870, he married Clarissa Ellis. To this union 7 children were born: Eva in 1876, Lillian in 1878, Myrtle in 1880, Etta in 1882, Nettie in 1884, Lester in 1886, Albin in 1889, and Henry in 1895.

Around 1880 Albin traded farms and moved to Allendale.

After Henry was born Albin and Clarissa divorced.

In 1900 Albin was living in a wagon in Colin County, Texas, and working as a farrier, but he returned to Allendale where he was living in 1910. Between July 1908 and April 1910 his daughter Etta and her husband John Shaffer moved to Lane County, Oregon along with Albin's son Albin.

According to Allyn Dean: About 1910, Albin decided to visit his brother and sisters. In the spring of the year, he hitched his team to the wagon and started for the west, where most of them were. As he went along he engaged in the horse trading business and by the time he reached the home of his brother in Missouri, he had several horses tied behind the wagon. Among these was a riding pony he gave to Marco's children. He continued on, visiting relatives, and trading horses till he reached Aberdeen, Washington. Here he visited his younger sister (Alice Hulet Paremeter), and started the return trip. He came through the Upper Peninsula, and across the Straits, and toward fall when he arrived at the home of his brother Byron Hulett at Summit City, he had twelve horses behind the wagon. He made his headquarters with Byron for several days visiting his brothers, Sam, George, half-brother John Jr., and several cousins, and then returned to Allendale. He probably received considerable profit from his horse dealings. Albin Hulett died in 1927, he had lived alone for several years. His daughter died, and word was sent to Allendale, a neighbor went to notify Albin. The neighbor found Albin, lying in the barn door dead, where he had been struck by lightning in a storm several days before. He was 78 years of age.

It's unknown if the above story is true but the last paragraph is not true.

Albin moved to Clark County, Washington sometime between 1910 and 1920. In 1920 he lived next door to his son Albin in Vancouver, WA, near his daughter Etta.

In 2007 the Columbian Newspaper published a book called History of Clark County, Washington: Through Their Eyes.

In the book is a picture of Albin and the caption states that Albin was known as the caretaker of Ulysses S Grant's mule during the 1850's when Grant was stationed in Vancouver. But since Albin was a child living in New York during that time, the story is not true. But Grant did sign the land warrant for Albin's homestead in Michigan.
