Biography

Walter Eaton Hulett was born on 5 Feb 1809 in Williamsburg, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States, the son of Anthony Hulett and Charlotte Curtis.[1]

Walter was an "Indian trader," selling "general merchandise," per the 1850 census,[2] with a "fancy store," per the 1860 census,[3] in Niagara, Niagara County, New York, where he lived most of his life.

1st Marriage

Walter married his first wife, Sarah Protheroe, in 1832 in Little Falls, Herkimer County, New York. Sarah was born about 1812,[4] probably in Little Falls, where her family lived. She was the daughter of Welsh immigrants John Protheroe[5] and Mary [unknown birth name] Protheroe. The 1838 will of Sarah's mother, Mary Protheroe, who died in 1840, lists: " ...my beloved son John Protheroe ...at sea...," "my beloved daughter Mary Ann, wife of Daniel Stewart...," "...my beloved daughter Ann Eliza, wife of John McKenster...," and "...my beloved daughter Sally, wife of Walter E. Hulett..."[6]

Walter and Sarah moved 230 miles west from Little Falls to Niagara, Niagara County, New York, at which time Walter sold his Little Falls property to Sarah's mother, Mary.[7] Walter's brother, Judge Theodore Graves Hulett, came to Niagara Falls at about the same time and would become superintendent of the first Suspension Bridge in Niagara Falls and a Justice of the Peace in 1849.[8]

Children with1st Wife

Sarah and Walter had the following children in Niagara:

  1. John P. Hulett (1833-1885), married Elizabeth Clark[9]
  2. Walter Curtis Hulett (1834-1924), married Lucia Maria Ware[10][11]
  3. Mary Protheroe Hulett (1837-1896), married Samuel Shears
  4. Stuart W. Hulett (1838-1883)[12]
  5. William E. Hulett (1840-1910), married Delilah "Lila" Lucas (her 1st marriage)[13]
  6. Chester Hulett (1842-____)

The 1924 death certificate of Walter and Sarah's son, Walter Curtis Hulett, incorrectly names his parents as "Theo Hulett" (who was his father's brother) and "Mary Prothro" (who was his mother's sister who married Daniel Stewart).[10]

Walter's 1st wife Sarah, aged 35, passed away on 8 Jan 1847 in Niagara Falls. Her hometown newspaper, the Mohawk Courier in Little Falls, New York, announced the sad news: “At Niagara Falls, on Friday, the 8th inst., Mrs. Sarah P., wife of Walter E. Hulett, formerly of this village, aged about 35 years.” [4]

2nd Marriage

After Sarah died in 1847, Walter married his 2nd wife, Julia A. Ritchie, about 1848 in Niagara.[2]. She was born about 1809 (not 1803, as her headstone says)[14] in Milton, Saratoga County, New York, the daughter of immigrant John Ritchie from Pathhead, Fife, Scotland.[15][16]

Children with 2nd Wife

Walter and his 2nd wife Julia had one child together in Niagara Falls:

  1. Elizabeth Ritchie Hulett (1849-1902), married Frank Andrew Peck[17]

Death

Walter, aged 57, died on 26 Oct 1866 and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery, Adrian, Lenawee County, Michigan, where Walter and Sarah's son Walter and family lived before they moved to Omaha, Nebraska.[18] Walter and Sarah's sons, John, Walter and Stuart, were also buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Adrian.

28 years later, his 2nd wife Julia died on 9 Aug 1894 in New York[19] and was buried in Ballston Spa Village Cemetery in Ballston Spa, Saratoga County, New York near her father.[14]
