I am looking for any descendants of Morgan Cockrell and Hannah Andrews. Family history says that Hannah Andrews was a Native American. Hannah married Morgan Cockrell in 1833, before the trail of tears and would not be included in any of the census gathered for Native Americans.

I do believe that there was an application submitted for admission to the Cherokee records but the request was denied based on 3 personal statements of being white and 3 of being Indian. I understand that this marriage if acknowledged as Indian - White would have been illegal. It was reported in our oral history as necessary for their children to be able to inherit the Cockrell property.

This information was reported to me by my paternal aunt Ida Hughes Eckersley.

Biography

There are a number of spellings of my name. My father spelled it "Terrica", the nurse filling out the birth certificate spelled it "Theresa", I often went by "Terri" and eventually I had it legally changed to "Teri".

I am a cautious researcher. I don't fully trust family connections that do not contain at least 2 sources. I am most comfortable with Quaker records and Census data after 1840.

My sister Bella Hughes contributed to geneology research for two cemeteies and one book of compiled records of Morgan Cockrell. I inherited two binders of notes and pictures from her.

My parernal aunt Ida Fern Hughes Eckersley, generated 30 or so boxes of research. I recently received 4 boxes of that geneology.

Bella's data vs Ida's data? Bella has mostly just computer generated family pages with a degree of guess work. Ida has primarily images of actual documents and very few written family sheets.

Conclusion: They both left numerous copies of their information, weeding is challenging. Bella boring - Ida messy but exceedingly accurate. I feel blessed to have the combined research of both these women. They bring life to the history of my Hughes - West line of family.

Hi Teri,

You do have some merges that you can complete now....

Hi Teri,

I noticed that you are struggling with the Hugh family and the Welsh founders of Pennsylvania. I think you will find that a lot of those people already have profiles on WikiTree. Several of us worked those families several years ago.....

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz, Teri!

Pre-1700 ancestors can be shared by many descendants, so collaboration is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ. Sources are very important here on Wikitree, especially on Pre-1700 profiles. It is how we show where we got the info and helps others find it too. Find out more about Pre-1700 Profile sourcing here and source citation info here.

The Virginia project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find other possibilities. Review the project page to learn about resources and guidelines as well as how to collaborate with the project members.

Thanks for the welcome.

I need to understand how to add the parent of a child that is not married....

Example: I have been married but I was not when my son was conceived. I want to add his dad without needing to add him as a spouse to myself.

I have a half sister who is the daughter of mom and her sister's husband. Father is known but not a spouse of my mom. It looks wrong to add him as a spouse while he is still married to my aunt.

P.S. To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Thank you so much for your assistance.

I am a "Do It Yourself" kind of person and so of course I blindly jumped in started getting data in.

Now that I have investigated the New member how to information I am really excited to be here.

I have been working diligently on Ancestory.com and I have become frustrated with a lot of information. I have started ignoring all hints from other tree members because I began blindly accepting all the other information as suspicious and I went back and began the process of only including information that I could see in legal records.

I have some work done by my sister Bella. I primarily ignored her research because she included erroneous data.

I have started looking at what she wrote and where she did go in person to look up records manually and list the citations.

Having stumbled thru some of the research on Ancestory I have developed some respect for her leg work and how easy it is to be misled going down certain paths based on some small overlooked facts.

As I said I'm excited to be here and based on my bumbling around I may be compelled to request a number of merges.

My primary interest began with a passion to link back to my Native American ancestors. My aunt first discovered this connection when she applied to one of the "Daughters of ??" and was rejected for Native American ancestry.

I have been pushing to get as much information before my membership to Ancestory expires. I have actually spent entire days and nights searching.

Will need some assistance understanding the unmarried parents, adoptions.

Nice to meet you and I look forward to participating in collaboration.

Thank you for adding your DNA Test information to your profile on WikiTree. Your information will be propagated to the profiles of your parents and your ancestors within about 24 hours of being added. It will also propagate to the profiles of the descendants of your ancestors, so they may see your information under the heading "DNA Connections" just as you can see theirs.

Getting started with DNA outlines how to proceed to use your DNA test information on WikiTree and DNA is a link to a collection of links about WikiTree's many features involving DNA.

The DNA Connections list on your profile will provide a visual way for you to find potential relatives on WikiTree who have also added their DNA test information. Using DNA tools at sites like GEDMatch.com, if you find a relative that matches your DNA sufficiently and you have genealogical sources for the intermediate relationships, you can mark the specific parental relationships back to the most recent ancestor that you both share as "confirmed with DNA." For details, guidance, and examples of how to properly document DNA confirmations, see DNA confirmation.

To get the best results, begin adding sourced profiles for your ancestors until you can connect to ancestors already in WikiTree. If you have exhausted what you know on one line, it can sometimes help to add what you know on another line. The more branches you are able to add the greater the likelihood of finding potential cousins to match with. The process of identifying which branch elements of DNA relate to will better enable you to find matches that relate to the particular branches you are researching.

Let me know if you have any questions and have fun!

HELP.

I uploaded a GEDCOM of my first three generations.

My profile doesn't show my information from it.

How can I add my family from this? I have uploaded this in other ancestry sites and my family connections appear automatically.

I can't find anything except how to upload it and compare it.
