Birth & Upbringing: Thomas was born c. 1882 in Annestown, Ireland. Son of the late William and Annie Hughes, of Annestown, Tramore, Co. Waterford;
Family: Thomas married Annie, of Annestown, Tramore, Co. Waterford, Ireland
Occupation: Policeman/Soldier - Joined the BSA Police in ; Reg.No.A27; served until November 1916. Thomas Hughes was a volunteer member of the force which was established by the BSAP for deployment to the north eastern border of Northern Rhodesia. This became known as Murray's Column, which comprised two infantry companies. The Column was to become the force which fought against the Germans in Tanganyika mostly along its frontier with Nyasaland and eventually in Tanganyika itself.
Honours and Awards:
Demise: KIA - while serving as a Private with Murray's Column in World War I - East Africa.[1] [2]. He was 34 years of age.
Burial: Thomas was buried at the Athlone Cemetery, Bulawayo, Rhodesia (Grave E 8 67) [3]
