Biography

Joseph was born in Arkansas in 1880 or 1882. His Certificate of Death indicated his date of birth as 10-11-1880, while his grave stone specified 11 Oct 1882. The grave stone was apparently in error as his 1917/1918 United States World War I Draft Registration Card, as a resident in Higden, Cleburne County, Arkansas, also indicated his date of birth as 11 Oct 1880. Joseph also appears to be shown in some records by his middle name, Earl or by his initials J.E.

A1880 census record has been identified that may be one for Joseph Earl Huff. The record was from Independence County, a county that was nearby Van Buren County, Arkansas, with which Joseph Earl Huff had been associated. Independence was one of the parent counties of Van Buren County, Arkansas, which was organized in 1833. If the 1880 census record applies to him, it appears that he may have been a son of a the head of household, John Huff, born about 1850 in Missouri (with John's father having been born in Tennessee and mother born in Arkansas) and Aby Huff, born about 1860 in Alabama (Aby's father having been born in Alabama and mother also born in Alabama). However, later census information specifying the places of birth of Joseph's parents don't seem to bear out the possibility of John and Aby as having been his parents. A closer study and analysis, and other searching and analyses, would be needed to ascertain relevance.

The plausible father, John, has been suggested to have been a son of John S(?) Huff, apparently born in Saline County, Missouri and John would have been a son of Peter S. Huff of Cocke County, Tennessee. More investigation would be needed to document or articulate a persausive argument in this regard. Or to eliminate this possibility.

Joseph Earl Huff married 1) Mary Jane "Janie" Cullum on 7 Apr 1904 in Van Buren County, Arkansas, and they were married by J.E. Bradford, J.P. They had son William Franklin "Frank" Huff (1905 –1980), named after Mary Jane's father. She died 20 May 1905, the same date as William Franklin Huff's birth, in Van Buren County, Arkansas and was buried in the Higden McLehaney Cemetery, Higden, Cleburne County, Arkansas. Joseph Earl Huff married 2) Rosa Caldwell on 1 Apr 1910 in Van Buren County, Arkansas. Joseph Earl and Rosa were said to have had nine children (years may be approximate):

  1. Ira Huff (1907 - 1980)
  2. Mildred (Huff) Main (1912 - 1990)
  3. Harvey Junis Huff (1917 - 1968)
  4. George Huff, in 1910 census as Julian? (1919 - )
  5. William "Bill" Huff (1921 - )
  6. Joe Huff (probably 1923 - 1997)
  7. Arthes Ray "Artie" Huff (1924 - 1982)
  8. Mary Imogene Huff, went by Imogene (1926 - )
  9. Garner Lee Huff (1928 - 1967)

He passed away 17 Jun 1960 in Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee at the Baptist Memorial Hospital. The Certificate of Death indicated his usual place of residence was Lee County, Arkansas. His spouse at time of death was Rosie Lee Huff. The informant was son Harvey Huff of Memphis, Tennessee.

In the 1880 census from Big Bottom, Independence County, Arkansas, there is a John and Aby Huff. According to the census John was born around 1850 in Missouri to a father born in Tennessee and a mother born in Arkansas, while Aby was born in 1860 in Alabama to parents from Alabama. They have 2 children on the census, Ellen, 2-years old at the time, and Earl, 6-months old at the time.

I am a DNA match to descendants of an Ellen Lewellen, who was born Huff in 1868.

My great-great grandfather went by Joseph Earl. None of his living descendants who knew him ever heard him speak of his parents or his history. Though a granddaughter of his had seen a document with the name of his mother somewhere along the lines of “Abeena Taft”, but this is unsupported, though Aby could be short for that.

He claimed on documents that his birthdate was October 11th, but the year often changed between 1880-81, this lead to the assumption that he did not know his real birthday. Following that assumption, his parents may have died early or had given him up for adoption and he did not know his history.

There are some public family trees that have Ellen and Earl Huff as children of another couple in the same area. Since there is no copy of the 1890 census to look at, I cannot determine where Ellen and Earl lived, but them being included in a non-Huff tree as children may mean there was an adoption at an early age and that the children kept their birth name.
