William Howlett was born on March 23, 1789 in Soham, Cambridgeshire, England. He was baptized on June 21st in Soham. He is a son of Edward Howlet and Sarah Friend.[1]
William Howlett was one of 250 convicts transported on the ship Larkins. It departed England 24 July 1817 and arrived in New South Wales 22 November the same year. Also aboard were William’s brothers Thomas and James.
William had been convicted at Cambridge, Isle of Ely Session of Peace Oyer and Terminer and Gaol Delivery for a term of 7 years on 10 February 1817. The following month, on 18 March 1817, both his brothers were who were convicted to transporation for life were tried and sentenced at Cambridge Gaol Delivery.
In 1826 he married Lydia, a daughter of two convicts and who had been a servant to Reverend Marsden at Parramatta.
In the 1828 Census William and his young family, plus his brother Thomas, are living together at Prospect:
William died in 1833.
It appears that his brother Thomas took-over his role as head of the household and partner to Lydia, with them having several children together in the years afterwards.
