Biography

Henry was born about 1819 in New York area. He disappears and reemerges in Brownsville, Texas around late 1850s. In Brownsville, he is a notary public, lawyer, and judge, as well as right-hand man to the famous King-Kenedy Ranch of southern Texas. He is a respected and revered stateman until his death in 1880.

DNA evidence supports Benjamin Howlett-Mary Rathbun DNA in Henry Howlett Jr's descendants.

Exhaustive genealogy records led to a Last Will and Testament of Henry's father Benjamin Howlett naming his two sons Henry L and John R, along with wife Mary Howlett, in October 1853.

Henry L's maternal uncle was banker, builder, and hotel fancier Benjamin Rathbun, who was imprisoned for a massive fraud of forged promissory notes totaling over $1.5 million in 1836. Co-conspirators were Benjamin's brother Lyman, his nephew Rathbun Allen, and also nephew Lyman Rathbun Howlett.

Lyman Rathbun Howlett is also the son of Benjamin and Mary Polly Rathbun Howlett. He fled the country when his uncle Benjamin's fraud was discovered in 1837, and reportedly ended up in Texas.

After the death of Benjamin Howlett (Henry's father), Henry pops up in Cameron County records. Due to DNA, I strongly believe that Henry Lyman Howlett and Lyman Rathbun Howlett are the same person. His identity was hidden in his father's LW&T (as "Henry L"), changes name to Henry Lyman, and hides his son's name on 1870 and 1880 census as "Joseph", to name a few instances of willfully obscuring his identity.
