He paid 26 pounds 12 shillings in annual rent for the land. By 1891 he was having financial issues and gave the Occupational Lease to the National Bank as Collateral. However by August 1894 his situation became worse and he decided to sell the property.
He died on 5 April 1895 [6] in Perth, Western Australia, at the age of 52 and was buried in the Church of England section of East Perth Cemetery.
