Matthew Howlett was born in Norfolk, England.

Matthew Howlett was born on 30 November 1842 in Yaxham, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom. His parents were Thomas Howlett and Sarah Hornigold. Matthew was baptized on 01 Jan 1843 [1] in Yaxham, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom. He had 4 brothers and seven sisters.

In 1851 [2] he lived with his parents Thomas and Sarah, and his sisters Phoebe and Frances in Yaxham, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom.

He married Sarah Cracknell on 16 Sep 1865 [3] in St John's Church, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom.

In 187 [4] Matthew lived in St Peter Per Mountergate, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom with his wife Sarah, children Ellen and Arthur and servant Louisa Curtis. He worked as a Commercial Clerk.

In 1881 [5] he lived with his wife Sarah and daughter Ellen in Watton, Norfolk, England, United Kingdom where he worked as a Corn Merchants Clerk.

On 1st October 1882 Matthew, his wife Sarah and their five children arrived in Fremantle, Western Australia aboard the barque Helena Mena. The voyage lasted ninety three days from London, England, United Kingdom.

On 1st July 1885 he applied for a Land Licence for Special Occupation and was granted 537 acres in the Avon Valley where he planted crops with his son Arthur. He paid 26 pounds 12 shillings in annual rent for the land. By 1891 he was having financial issues and gave the Occupational Lease to the National Bank as Collateral. However by August 1894 his situation became worse and he decided to sell the property.

He died on 5 April 1895 [6] in Perth, Western Australia, at the age of 52 and was buried in the Church of England section of East Perth Cemetery.
