Biography

Mary was born in 1853. Her birth was registered in Monmouth, the district covering the Forest of Dean. No mother's maiden name was listed. ^[1] Later that year her mother married James Evans so it is more than likely he was her father. Mary was always called 'daughter' in census records and she listed James on her marriage certificate.

In 1861 Mary Ann Howells was living with parents James and Sarah Evans in Joyford. James was a Coal Miner. She had 3 'Evans' siblings living there as well. ^[2] The family used the surnames Evans and Ambury (and sometimes both).

In 20 August 1882 Mary Ann Ambrey Evans married William Grace in Parkend. William was a Railway Guard, living in Neath, Wales. His father Thomas was a Gardener. Mary Ann was living in Yorkley and her father James was a Collier. Her sister Rhoda (now Rhoda Ruck) was a witness. ^[3]

In 1891 William and Mary Ann were living in Railway Terrace, Nayland, Pembrokeshire with 3 children. It was noted William had been born in Ireland. ^[4] William died the following year aged just 38.

In 1897 Mary Ann married again, to George Stephens. ^[5]

In 1911 the couple had been married 14 years and had 1 child. The couple lived in Llantrisant, Pontypridd with their daughter Jane and Mary Anne's daughter Constance May Grace. George was a Professor of Music and mary's entry ditto's that although I'm not sure she was a Professor of Music, perhaps she assisted her husband. ^[6]

No definitive death record has been found.
